Großpold
Großpold (Romanian Apoldu de Sus, Transylvanian-Saxon: Grißpuln, Landler: Großpoln, Hungarian: Nagyapold) is a settlement located between Mühlbach and Hermannstadt.
It lies in the Unterwald and is surrounded by rich vineyards and orchards. Großpold was for almost four hundred years one of the most important settlements in the Unterwald, but then the village was completely burned down. The population had a very hard time. It was decimated by famines, plague and the Kuruc wars. In the mid-18th century the situation of the Großpold residents improved through the immigration of Landlers.
Just as in Großau and Neppendorf, Protestant Landlers expelled from the Salzkammergut and Carinthia were also settled in Großpold, whose dialect and traditional dress have been preserved alongside those of the Transylvanian Saxons to this day.
